Best way to teach conversions of inches, feet, and yards

My student is not grasping the relationships of these measures nor how to convert between them.

I like to be practical in lessons so I think I'd start with a tape measure.

Your student can use it to do conversions and you can set measuring exercises where a measurement can be given in a variety of ways.
