Re: Add 13 more and post it forever.

27989

- 2 + 7 + 9 + 8 - 9 = 13

Puzzle:

- TWO - SEVEN + NINE + EIGHT - NINE = 27989

Each letter in the puzzle stands for a different single-digit number from 0 to 9, and the sum of the digits on the left-hand side of the equation is a multiple of 13.

Find the letter values. The puzzle has a unique solution.

Hi Bobby;

The standard forms of your code and rasher's give multiple solutions, but I added some code for the 'multiple of 13' constraint to output just the unique solution for both programs.

Total running times were 2.3 seconds (rasher's) and 60.4 seconds (yours).

The sum of the digits of the sum of all of the main answers that should have been given (and most were) up to and including this post = 13 + 13 + 13.

Re: Add 13 more and post it forever.

28132

28 - 13 - 2 = 13

Puzzle:

- TWO - EIGHT - ONE + THREE - TWO = 28132

Each letter in the puzzle stands for a different single-digit number from 0 to 9 (only nine of which are used, including the number 9), and the sum of the sum of the digits on the left-hand side of the equation = 13.

Find the letter values. The puzzle has a unique solution.

Re: Add 13 more and post it forever.

I have a couple of answers but do not understand that the LHS adds up to 13? What do I do with those negative signs?

Hi Bobby;

Maybe my wording was ambiguous. Anyway, I've fixed it (I hope) by adding "(their 'absolute value')" after "digits".

Hi phrontister;

How do I handle -458 - 78543 for instance?

Re: Add 13 more and post it forever.

28184

Hi Bobby;

M, Rasher's code and your code all evaluate -458 - 78543 as -79001, as do all the calculators I tried it in (including MIF's new Scientific Calculator).

Edit: Oops!! Sorry, Bobby...I made a mistake. The wording should be:

Each letter in the puzzle stands for a different single-digit number from 0 to 9 (only nine of which are used, including the number 9), and the sum of the sum of the digits on the left-hand side of the equation = 13.

I've corrected post #2164.

Hi;

- 601 - 38476  - 123 + 67933 - 601 = 28132

2 + 8 + 1 + 9 - 7 = 13
