Not exactly.

Hmmmm. Them is fighting words where I come from.

Re: 0^0 equals 1 or undefined?

hi Stefy,

Been getting tools ready to do some real work this afternoon.

Stefy wrote:

But what are the privileges of defining 0.999... to "exist" as a mathematical concept and be equal to 1?

That's my whole point.  Anyone can have their own mathematics just by defining it.  If it is consistent and  useful, others may adopt it too.

If it isn't useful, others will probably just ignore it.

If it's inconsistent, then lots of folk will tell you so.

Whatever, nobody has to use it if they think it is odd, poorly defined or just they don't understand it.

We've had a few of those on the forum recently.  smile

Hi Bob

True, true.

What kind of tools?

Hi bobbym

Look the phrase up.

Saws, powered screwdriver, tape measure, sandpaper ....  I'm repairing boxes that act as general purpose stage extensions.  Roughly 800 (H) x 1200 x 1200.  The side panels of some have developed holes.

Sorry, I gave up looking things up. I could not understand it anyway.

Re: 0^0 equals 1 or undefined?

Hi Bob

What do you need those for?

Hi bobbym

You should really look things up from time to time...

Re: 0^0 equals 1 or undefined?

I already know what it means because I have been wrongfully accused of doing that. If it were not you saying .99999999... ≠ 1, I would not be involved in the debate.

Re: 0^0 equals 1 or undefined?

I'm not actually saying that 0.999!=1, just that 0.999... should be barred.

Re: 0^0 equals 1 or undefined?

The boxes are quite big and strong enough to stand on.  They are the same height as the school stage so they make the stage bigger.  There are 6 boxes plus 4 staircases built to the same sizes.  So you can arrange them in a variety of ways for shows to have centre stairs or side stairs or whatever.  Once we arranged them out in a straight line from the stage and made a cat-walk for a fashion show.

But kids sit on them and swing their feet.  Over time, some side panels have developed holes and once a small hole starts, some ***&&!! will manage to kick it bigger.  gggrrrr! swear

One got large enough for a kid to climb inside the box.  ?????

So I'm about to take off the damaged bits and saw up new panels to replaced them.  Hopefully one afternoon's work.  Then someone else is going to paint them black.

Re: 0^0 equals 1 or undefined?

Yes, I will bar it immediately.

To me the algebraic idea, the geometric series and the fraction idea are enough. We numerical people do not have problems with .99999999... = 1.

You can bar it from your universe if you like but it's in mine and you cannot take it away!

Re: 0^0 equals 1 or undefined?

Should do;   if I get started.  Sometimes I arrive to discover that a teacher wants to use the hall for some frivolous purpose like teaching children.  Then I have to come back home and try again another day.

Re: 0^0 equals 1 or undefined?

I have revived this debate here.

Yes, and initiating a hot debate is tempting

I convinced Calvin 0^0 is 1
