Re: Windows or Linux?

Hi;

This is not a casual decision. You should have many reasons of your own otherwise why change.

There are thousands of reasons.

Re: Windows or Linux?

First I need to know characteristics of both to have my own opinion.

Re: Windows or Linux?

Both are operating systems. Both work. Linux is a little bit more command line oriented. Speed is about the same for common tasks.

Now, what about dislikes...

Re: Windows or Linux?

Both are operating systems.

I knew that already.

Both work.

That,too.

Speed is about the same for common tasks.

Good to know.

Now, what about dislikes...

Why go to dislikes immediately? Tell me about Linux's capabilities in regular tasks.Does it have stuff Windows doesn't and vice versa?

I have used Slax, Puppy 421 and Ubuntu 9. They all support about the same thing as say XP  ( the best Windows ). Linux has a few more utilities built in and comes with more programs built in.

I consider an advantage that it's open source.

Now you are dealing with the other things, the dislikes...

Many people dislike Windoze policy of hiding their code. They have good reason too...

What is that reason? And why did you spell it Windoze?

You do not know? The hackers and crackers coined that phrase. It implies that Windows is slow.

Re: Windows or Linux?

Linux is really the work of one man. Windoze is the work of a giant corporation with one man at the head. One guy is a billionaire, the other one is not.

Re: Windows or Linux?

I think people here are just starting to get used to Linux.

I have started the download for Linux Ubuntu and will decide tomorrow if I want to install it. It says on the Ubuntu site that it can run alongside Windows, but I will have to get into that a little.

Yes it can run right along side of Windoze.

Puppy is the easiest and smallest, around 100MB.

Re: Windows or Linux?

I have not used it in a long time. I do not even know if they have continued it.

Ubuntu and Puppy are the leaders now. I used Suse and did not like it.

If Puppy really is smaller I will try it first.

Re: Windows or Linux?

I think Ubuntu is a good choice.

Also make sure the programs you love to use in Windows will run under Linux, or at least have good alternatives.

Office => OpenOffice or LibreOffice
etc.
