use synthetic divison to divide x^5 - 7x^3 - 5x^2 + x - 12 by x - 3.

                                                  -2x - 12
                                                  -2x + 6
                                                  -----------
                                                            -18

So your final answer should be x^4 + 3x^3 + 2x^2  + x - 2 - 18/(x-3)

Actually, there is a typo,
there is no remainder.
It is +4, not -2.
