Why silent edit?

Hi MathsIsFun;

My apologies if this post is too rude but...
That is not a good thing. Years ago, even MIF did not have this facility.

I agree that mods might need to edit things. But, why silently? He is not supposed to be afraid to edit something? That denies the responsibility of the mod. Moreover, that threatens the non-mod folks because it looks like he has said which he didn't.

Besides, if there was a timestamp and just a timestamp of the edit and the mod, why would it harm anyone?

;
I sincerely hope that no mod or Admin(including MIF) is going to alter this line or the the lines above it because I really want a response from him.

Re: Why silent edit?

Hi Agnishom;

Silent edit is for a person's own posts. If I have to ever edit someone else's post it is for security reasons or disciplinary action. Then it is not silent. But thank heavens that is extremely rare.

Silent edit has been around since I joined.

Re: Why silent edit?

Then it is not silent.

It is.

I've seen you editing a lot of posts without any timestamp left behind.

Re: Why silent edit?

Yes, I make a lot of mistakes when I post. My vision is not good and my left hand is useless to me so typing and checking takes a long time. I usually need to edit a post 3 or 4 times. Because I am an admin there is no timestamp.

If that is the cause of the confusion then I do apologize. Most of the people here know what to expect when I post. They know it will be changed in a minute or so.

I think that is the main problem. Why does it have to be silent for mods and admins?

Re: Why silent edit?

I mean you edit a lot of my posts without leaving a edit-stamp behind.

You're welcome to edit but why should you remove the timestamp?

Re: Why silent edit?

I rarely ever edit anyone's post. I believe in free speech. Just posts you and I talk about private matters. When I delete mine I sometimes am forced to edit the post before too. You agree that sometimes this is necessary.

Re: Why silent edit?

I do agree.

But, that does not explain why it has to be silent

Re: Why silent edit?

Just a privilege that is given to mods. In my case it makes me look smarter than I am.

When I have had to edit another person's post you will see [ admin removed blah blah blah ]

Re: Why silent edit?

I reckon you do that manually? and the square bracket occurs because you're influenced by the M syntax?

That is good reasoning but I think I got it from MIF.

Sorry, I did not see anonimnystefy up there.

Well, there is probably one for my forum as well, but I cannot find it.

If it is on by default then that means it is the preferred setting.

Re: Why silent edit?

I seem to remember having a choice to turn this on and off ages ago, but I cannot find it now.  Also everybody's  posts used to say 'last edited at ...' but that seems to have disappeared for me,  too.  Cannot find anything to suggest I've turned this off. ???

I'm like bobbym in that I make slip ups when I first post.  Usually because my mathematics has rushed ahead of my reading and writing so I may have answered a completely different question from the one asked, or just messed up my answer by putting in the wrong things.

I always read through what I've typed and often have to make corrections.  I don't think these really count as edits, just eliminating typos etc.

If I do have a later thought then I put something like LATER EDIT: to show this.

If I make a mistake that shows up later I may go back and add an edit so that readers are not mis-informed by such a thing.  I don't usually re-write history to make it seem like I never make mistakes.

Why is the issue of silent edits important?

Re: Why silent edit?

I see no reason for the edits to be silent.
